Greg's Dec 2014 Newsletter

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
This has been the first holiday season I have spent in the USA since the holiday season of 2009, and I must say it has been really good to be back and be able to be with my family and friends. I also want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your love & support during these last 4 years since I first moved to Chile a little over 4 years ago. I can’t thank you all enough and only hope that God can repay you for all the encouragement, support, love you showed me and my team during that time. And speaking of my team, here is Pepe’s letter from Chile summarizing the events of December:

“We greet you in the love of Christ. We wish you many blessings in this special time. May God bless you and grant you an excellent 2015. We hope you have been able to pass time with your family and want you to know that we are already living in Santiago because of financial reasons, and that we were not able to solve the problems with our expenses and stay in La Serena. We remain in contact with all the people we have been working with, but we also want you to know that even though we have left La Serena we have not stopped working for the Lord. My wife Gislaine was sharing with North-American missionaries that were visiting our country; and I was in Colombia, invited by the “International Sport Coalition,” working with at-risk kids and youth. The work was a great blessing as we were able to reach more than 1500 kids in one week with the gospel of Jesus, even though we had to flee from violence 4 times (because of the Revolutionary Para-military Army in Colombia). We ask you all to pray for that country and for those kids who put their lives at risk every day.

As a family, we are once again depending on God and waiting for Him to give us some orientation and income, as He has always done. We also want to thank each one of you, who has helped us in this time and for your prayers. We ask for God’s blessing on you and your family during this next year 2015.

Our sincerest greetings in the love of Christ…”

Greg's November 2014 Newsletter

Happy Thanksgiving from Costa Mesa: This was the first Thanksgiving I spent in the USA during the past 4 years, and it was great to be around for it. I hope you were able to enjoy it with your loved ones, and that you were able to take some time to recognize all you have to be thankful for.

Having said that, I want to take time to thank you all for your prayers and economic support of Fuego URbano for the past 4 years; and hope you can continue supporting Pepe & Gislaine for 4 more months (until February 2015) when Pepe will start teaching and supporting themselves financially from that. The reason I bring this up is because last month only about 1/3 of the typical monthly support came in, which means Pepe and Gislaine are having to face real economic challenges. Thanks so much.

I have translated their support letter here:
We greet you with the peace of the Lord, hoping that you and your family are doing well. The year is ending and the challenges increase for our family. This month we only received 30% of the total of our economic support, which allows us to pay the rent for our house but nothing more. That was a tough blow for us because we believed that much of our supporters were going to support us until February 2015, but we still don’t know what happened. Our work continues because we understand that it is a calling and commitment with the Lord, and not with men, but we will have to take some tough decisions. We will need to leave our house, sell our car along with some of our things, and move wherever we find work. Unfortunately, we must respect the order of our priorities: God, family, and ministry.

We need to take these actions but we are sad for the people we have been reaching until now, and whom we have been discipling. I am also working to raise up new supporters to pass through this financial problem. I lament the fact that I don’t know you personally so I could thank you personally for your support until now, and we want you to know that we will keep working for God in the place where we are, and we hope to accomplish the dreams and projects that are in our heart. If you wish to write or know more information, please write us at:   jose@fuegourbano.org   or   gis@fuegourbano.org   Thanks so much.

Greg, Pepe & Gislaine's October 2014 Newsletter

Greetings from Costa Mesa: I hope this update finds you well. Please take a moment to check out the pictures and read from Pepe and Gislaine down in Chile, to see and learn what has been going on with them and Fuego Urbano in October.

Here Is Pepe & Gisaline’s October Update (which I translated):

“Grace and peace brothers and sisters; we greet you in the love of the Lord from La Serena, Chile: This month of October was a little different. We had the blessing of traveling to Brazil for a few days to be there with Gislaine’s family. I had not had the opportunity to visit the family in Brazil since the tragedy of losing my brother in-law. It was a time of sharing with them and strengthening the bonds with the family, not to mention that the only family member there who is a Christian is my mother in-law. We were able to visit my father in-law and share with him about the love of God. My wife needed to spend that time with her family because she has spent so many years of her life away from them due to reasons of the ministry; and we were only able to make the trip because a brother was able to raise an offering and give it to us.

Whenever we are in Brazil we receive invitations to preach in various churches and this time was no different. We shared about our work in Chile and about our challenge to keep planting churches in the north of our country, which is a dry and arid place for the gospel.

I was able to visit the sports program that my wife and I started in a favela (slums ran by drug-traffickers) of Ipatinga, Brazil when we lived in Brazil before moving back to Chile in 2009. Thank God we were able to see the results after many years, where many of the kids who were part of that project are walking with Christ today, and participating in the church.

I visited the Rehab Center for chemical dependencies that a church runs and believe that could be an area we could work in with Fuego Urbano in Chile.

We ask for your prayers and covering for us and the families that are being reached in Chile with the gospel of Christ, and we implore you to keep supporting our work as Fuego Urbano. It is a time of new challenges but we keep trusting in God, in the support of your prayers, and in your financial support. Greg's September 2014 Newsletter

Greetings from Costa Mesa: I finally got a job!
I got hired at Trader Joe’s in Tustin about 2 weeks ago and am really excited and relieved to finally be able to work again. It has been a longer process then I ever anticipated and I want to thank you all for your prayers and words/emails of encouragement, as well as all of you who went out of your way to try to set me up in various job opportunities. I am excited about finally being able to move into the next stage of my life and prepare for my future here in the USA; but I want you all to know how grateful I am to you all. Thanks!

Here is Pepe & Gislaine’s September update from Chile:

“Grace and peace brothers and sisters; we greet you in the love of the Lord from La Serena, Chile. In September we celebrate our “fiestas patrias” (literally “country parties” where they celebrate their Independence from Spain on Sep 18th: imagine our July 4th stretched out for the whole month of July and you start to get the picture), and it has been a month of good news and encouragement. The small-group gathering in Las Compañías has already started producing fruit. The gathering at Henry’s house has turned out to be a blessing because every Friday his whole family gathers there and every week we have some new visitor. They are always really happy when we arrive and despite their economic needs, they greet us with sopaipillas (typical Chilean food) and empanadas which they make themselves.

Our gatherings are being done in the living room of Henry’s house. They live in very humble but welcoming conditions, and last weekend I offered to paint the walls of Henry’s house as a way of thanking them. They we really happy since it had been a dream of theirs to paint the walls; and through all this we were able to honor their family and show the love of God with our actions.

Another great piece of news was that a neighbor found out about our gatherings and asked if we could visit her and pray for her daughter, who was suffering from inflation and indigestion of her stomach and intestines. On the first Friday of last month, we visited her to pray and share the word of the Lord, and after 2 weeks she was really grateful because her daughter’s health improved considerably after we prayed for her. Now she is going to participate in a new women’s group that will start next month in that community.

This month the country’s children were on vacation for a week and we took advantage of the opportunity to have our friend Wilson visit us. Wilson works with Chile’s national team of soccer and he blessed us with a presentation of his collection of original World-Cup jerseys from players from all over the world. He also shared his testimony and how he came to faith; and it was the first point of contact in the community of Tierras Blancas where we hope to start a new small-group of Fuego Urbano in the future.

As a family we are more stable, after the death of Gislaine’s brother. We ask for your prayer and covering for us and the families that are being reached by the gospel of Christ. We ask you to continue supporting our work as Fuego Urbano Church, as it is a time of new challenges but we keep trusting in God and in the support of your prayers and finances. If you would like to know more about our activities in Chile with Fuego Urano, please visit our Blog:  http://jose-pepe-eyzaguirre-mision.tumblr.com/   or write us at:  jose@fuegourbano.org , gis@fuegourbano.org

Greg's August 2014 Newsletter

Greetings from Costa Mesa: I hope you were able to enjoy this summer and that you will be able to take advantage of the last few days of it. I have been looking for jobs (outside of churches) and still have not found one, so that has been frustrating but I’m trying to stay positive and be patient. Now that Fall is here I will be really trying hard to find something and I would appreciate your prayers regarding that. Also, Pepe & Gislaine have sent me their update for August so I will include the translated message below.

UPDATE FROM PEPE & GISLAINE IN CHILE:
“Grace and peace friends, we greet you from La Serena, Chile in the love of the Lord:
We hope that you, your family, and your congregations are doing well. We want to begin this new report with the following citation: ‘always giving thanks for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God the Father (Eph 5:20).’

The month of August started abruptly with the news of the death of “Adalto,” the brother of Gislaine (my wife), who died in a tragic motorcycle accident while on his way to the university in Brazil. At the time, I (Pepe) was training some leaders in Bolivia and had to return to La Serena. Thanks to God, the very people I was training in Bolivia raised an offering for me and I was able to get a flight that night, because I needed to support my wife Gislaine who was very affected by the news.

This was a new challenge to our faith because most of the time we are the ones supporting people who suffer loss or who are going through personal problems like marriage separations and personal struggles in different areas of their lives; but this time it was our turn to ‘suffer.” It was our turn to cry and confront this loss without our faith falling away. How could we worship and thank Him during the suffering? Without a doubt we were able to put to the test the saying that we are stronger in our weakness. Thanks to God, we have received the peace of God in our lives and we rest in the love and faithfulness He shows to His children. Today we can say we love Him and that God can use even death itself to give ‘spiritual’ life; and that Gislaine is in Brazil along with our youngest son Gean Philippe to be by her mom, who is the only Christian in their family. We ask for your prayers so that she can give testimony of the love of Christ to her family and friends.

We are very grateful to God for backing us up in setting up a bible-study, once again, at Henry’s house in Las Compañías; and every Friday we are surprised with a new visitor. Last week we received ‘Boty,’ who is an old friend of ours since he was little and a very good skater. Unfortunately he left all that behind and joined a gang that dedicated itself to robbing and selling drugs. It really surprised us to see him and my wife was able to give him a big hug. He is looking for a change in his life and we want to be by his side to help him. We ask that you would pray for ‘Boty’ (together with Gislaine in the photo below) and that God would continue to work in his life. “

Greg's July 2014 Newsletter

Greetings from Costa Mesa: I hope you are enjoying the summer. I am still looking for jobs and would appreciate your prayers regarding that. Please read below to see what Pepe & Gislaine have been up to this July:

Here is what Pepe & Gislaine wrote this month from Chile:

“Grace and peace to you, friends; we greet you from our little corner of South America. It has been a month filled with blessings and lots of ministerial activity. Our son Gabriel (8 years old) just finished his winter vacation. It was a great time to share as a family. We were able to climb Cerro Grande walking with the whole family and it was beautiful to be able to enjoy God’s creation. In our ministry, as we told you in our previous letter, we are having our meetings in our house because as you know, we focus on people who normally would not go inside a church. We have been sharing quality time with the families, brothers and sisters of the church, and that has been a big blessing. In Chile, as in many areas of the world, there is a lot of rejection and judgment towards any religious authority figure, due in large part to the sexual abuse cases of the Catholic Fathers and unfortunately, evangelical churches that don’t give a good testimony, which the newspapers always report. That’s why we are intensifying our work face-to-face. People believe in God but they are skeptic of religious systems. This has presented us with the big challenge of how to give someone the message in ways that are more and more relevant, clean, and filled with the love of Christ. We just received word that a woman wanted us to visit her in her house because she said her house was “spiritually weighed down,” and that some weird things had happened there: sounds, doors shutting, etc. We were able to visit her and she received us very happily. We were able to share the gospel of Jesus with her and pray for her and her family (see photo). This month we began again with our bible study “Profundo” in Las Compañías, in Henry’s house, and the group is growing every Friday.

The children’s ministry of the church is called “Fuegitos,” which takes place every Sunday and has a weekly lesson applied to everyday life. We pray that this work will continue growing and that the gospel and love of Jesus will reach many more children.

We hope you will keep supporting our work with Fuego Urbano. It is time of new challenges but we keep trusting in God, in the support of your prayers, and in your financial support. Greg's June 2014 Newsletter

WORLD CUP FEVER: I have been back in CA for 4 months now and am still looking for a job. The one good thing about not having one is that I have been able to watch ALL the World Cup games, and all the countries I have lived in are playing amazing and advanced to the elimination rounds: USA, Chile, Costa Rica, & Argentina. I guess its true: every cloud has a silver lining. The World Cup seems to be mine, which isn’t a bad alternative after all.

FIRST: I (GREG) AM STILL LOOKING FOR A JOB
I am still looking for a job and would appreciate your prayers regarding my situation. I have been home for 4 months now and my situation is starting to weigh on me at this point. I am now open to any positions, whether in church-ministry or outside it, and would greatly appreciate any help, connections, advice, suggestions and prayers you might have to offer. As you all know, this is not exactly the best economy to find a job in, no matter what sector one looks in.

SECOND: HERE IS WHAT PEPE & GISLAINE WROTE THIS MONTH FROM CHILE

“Grace and peace to you all; we hope you and your families are doing well. It is time for the World Cup 2014 in Brazil, and that’s why we are developing some evangelism activities in our city under the name “More Then Conquerors.” We are visiting the communities of La Serena and Coquimbo bringing friendly games of soccer, visits to the jails, doing training sessions with various churches, and holding soccer tournaments with children and teen-agers. Here are some images from our work:

This month we received Gulherme from Brazil who will be supporting us in our ministry with soccer. He is a very good player and will be reinforcing our team and giving testimony with his life. We are also visiting the jails weekly: the adult jail of Huachalalume and the jail for minors where we visit the prisoners and share with them a message of hope and salvation.

Because our financial support has shrunk, we are now holding our church-gatherings in our house. We ask you to continue supporting our work with Fuego Urbano in this time. It is a time of new challenges but we continue trusting in God and in the support of your prayers and finances. If you want to know more about our activities with Fuego Urbano in Chile then please visit our new Blog: http://jose-pepe-eyzaguirre-mision.tumblr.com/  or write us at  jose@fuegourbano.org

Greg's May 2014 Newsletter

GREETINGS FROM CALIFORNIA: I hope this Newsletter finds you well and enjoying the summer weather we have had recently. I am still looking for a job but now I’m looking for any job in any industry, so that I can help start a new faith-community with some friends of mine. Please read below to learn more, and to find out what has been going on with Pepe & Gislaine and Fuego Urbano.

FIRST: I AM NOW LOOKING FOR A JOB IN ANY FIELD INSTEAD OF A “MINISTRY” POSITION. I am going to be teaming up with some close friends to start a new community of faith in the backyard of one of the couples involved. We are really excited about this but because there will be no paid staff (at least at the beginning), I will need to find a job to support myself. Therefore, I am now looking for ANY jobs in ANY sector or industry: profit, non-profit, action sports, education, civil, govt., etc. so if you know of anything or know people who might, could you please let me know? I have my BA in Spanish & Speech Communications from CSULB, my Masters of Divinity from Fuller Seminary; and I am fluent in Spanish so if there are any jobs needing bi-lingual candidates (in any field/industry but especially in the non-profit world), I would be extremely interested. Can you please pray for me as I enter into this new phase: that God would bring along the right job for me and that He would also guide the beginnings of this new community of faith (I will have more info about that in next month’s newsletter)? Could you also let me know if you have any contacts as far as jobs go?

SECOND: HERE IS WHAT PEPE WROTE FROM CHILE THIS MONTH
“We send you greetings with the peace of the Lord: The winter is already arriving in our country and every day is a little colder. Unfortunately we haven’t had much rain and we need rain in our region. We tell you this so you can pray for the needs of our country, which has been affected by big fires and some big earthquakes that have left the whole country a bit uneasy.

We have shared in church about how important it is for us to be the salt & light (Mt 5:13-16) in the midst of all the needs that surround us; and this week a couple from our church (Mauricio & Kara) went to see their dentist, who is Columbian and has lived here in Chile with his wife for 7 years. He started a small clinic in the neighborhood where we gather, and they (Mauricio & Kara) realized that as foreigners he and his wife (the dentist) were very alone; so Mauricio & Kara invited them to surf and afterwards they were joined by some other Columbians who also work at the clinic. The biggest surprise came when they invited them to eat and the Columbians said that was the first time anyone had ever invited them to something like that since they had been in Chile. That was the first time anyone had invited them to their house to eat and they also had the opportunities to share their testimonies together. This past weekend we had an awesome afternoon of surfing and they were really open to the gospel. Glory to God! We will be using the 2 long-boards that were donated to Fuego Urbano so that we can connect with them through surfing…Please pray for Jesús, Alexander, & Felipe (the three on the right in the photo below, with Mauricio, Pepe, & Maykol on the left side).

This week I was invited by the International Coalition of Sports Ministries to Uruguay, to train various churches and pastors from Uruguay’s capital on how to use sports to work with kids & youth. Here are some pictures from the time there…”

THIRD: THANKS TO THOSE WHO HAVE COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING PEPE & GISLAINE UNTIL NEXT FEBRUARY, 2015. Like we said last month, this will give him time to find a teaching position and be self-sustaining from then on. At that point we will discontinue all donations & giving.

FINALLY: As always there are 3 ways you may give financially to Fuego Urbano. For Automatic Monthly Online Donations you may sign up for amounts of $25, $50, $100, or $200 per month. Just go to the right side of my Blog (http://greghaugh.blogspot.com) where it says ‘Recurring Donation’ and adjust drop-down menu to the amount you’d like to give each month; then click ‘Subscribe’ and it will take you through the process. Thanks so much for all your help, prayers, and support over these years!

GREG, PEPE & GISLAINE'S APRIL 2014 NEWSLETTER

GREETINGS FROM CALIFORNIA: I hope this Newsletter finds you well. I (Greg) am still looking for ministry positions so please keep your eyes and ears open for me, and please read below to hear more about Pepe & Gislaine in Chile with Fuego Urbano.

FIRST: WILL YOU CONSIDER SUPPORTING PEPE & GISLAINE FINANCIALLY FOR 10 MORE MONTHS, UNTIL FEB 2015? After talking with Pepe & Gislaine, we agreed that the best thing we could hope for from our supporters at this point, is to continue supporting them and their work with Fuego Urbano until February, 2015, when Pepe could then look for a job as a teacher (which is what he studied and did before). Since the school years there begin in March, it would be almost impossible for him to find a job at this time of year. But if we could get as many of our supporters as are able, to continue supporting them until February 2015, then Pepe could find a job teaching and we would then shut down the economic support from you all. Would you prayerfully consider supporting them until this February so they can continue with the ministry of Fuego Urbano and not be left without enough income in the meantime?

SECOND: BELOW I TRANSLATED WHAT PEPE & GISLAINE WROTE THIS MONTH:
“We want to begin this report by thanking you all for your commitment in helping to start Fuego Urbano in Northern Chile. The work in Chile is not easy. It is a difficult country, and even more so in the north where it is very dry, has a strong mystic background, and a Catholic syncretism (Catholic beliefs mixed with indigenous beliefs) that dominates the area. It is a region that has a large number of historic Catholic churches and where they have the second-largest festival of devotion to the virgin Mary in all of Chile, where some 60,000 people gather each year.

However we have successes like establishing our work with sports & basketball that continues firm after all these years, where we are beginning a bible-study after the training times, and handing out bibles and weekly devotionals that are applied to life and sports. Soon we will also begin meeting in the houses of the people involved as well.

We know that it is difficult for you to support us indefinitely without knowing us personally, so we are asking if you would support us financially until February, 2015, which is which is when I (Pepe) could look for a job as a P.E. Teacher (which is my profession). It is hard to find work this far into the school-year (which begins in March). We will however, continue reporting to you all about our work and ministry like we have always done up until now.
If you would like to contact us, receive more information, or visit us, you can write us at:

A Hug in Christ,
The Family Eyzaguirre-Matos
(Pepe, Gislaine, Gabriel, Gean-Felipe)”

FINALLY: As always there are 3 ways you may give financially to Fuego Urbano. For Automatic Monthly Online Donations you may sign up for amounts of $25, $50, $100, or $200 per month. Just go to the right side of my Blog (http://greghaugh.blogspot.com) where it says ‘Recurring Donation’ and adjust drop-down menu to the amount you’d like to give each month; then click ‘Subscribe’ and it will take you through the process. One-Time Online Donations are available as well: click the ‘Donate’ button on my Blog just below where it says ‘1-Time Donation’ and it will take you through the process. Or if you prefer Personal Checks you can make them out to ‘Fishers of Men Fellowship’ and mail them to: Fishers of Men Fellowship, PO Box 9284, Newport Beach, CA 92658.  And all donations are fully tax-deductible.

Thanks so much for all your help, prayers, and support over these years!

Greg Haugh, Jose, Gislaine, Gabriel, and Gean-Felipe Eyzaguirre
